Hi, I’m Judy. As a public historian of science, I develop resources that help audiences look at the world from the perspective of the history of science. I edit a collection of Scientific Biographies and contribute to a wide variety of interpretive projects (physical and digital) at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia, PA.
I am also a historian of the human sciences focused on nineteenth- and twentieth-century linguistics. This research cuts across modern European intellectual history, the history of anthropology, translation studies, labor history, sound studies, and the history of information science. I am interested in the tension between general and specific approaches to language, a key to understanding the history of the human sciences as a whole. Some researchers have focused on essential characteristics shared by all, while others have looked to dynamic markers of human difference. How, why, and to what effect have these priorities changed over time? I have sought to address such questions in projects outlined here and here.
